Cordray Confirmed as CFPB Director

In a recent interview with Bank Systems & Technology, Financial Services Roundtable CEO Tim Pawlenty said that while his organization has a good working relationship with Cordray, they would like to see reforms in terms of oversight and funding. “We think there should be a board of 3-5 members overseeing the CFPB and their funding,” Pawlenty added. “And currently, none of that exists.”

Corker-Warner: A Great Starting Point in GSE Reform Debate

It has been five years since Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored enterprises, were taken over by the federal government. Since then, we have witnessed an academic debate over GSE reform that has swung between proposals for the elimination of any role for the government in the mortgage market (other than through the direct guarantee provided by the Federal Housing Administration, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Agriculture rural housing programs) and proposals for some form of continuing federal support for liquidity in the mortgage market. It is time for Congress to act. Our housing finance system is broken and in need of repair.

Implementation Date of Credit Insurance Premium Rules, 05-23-13

The undersigned associations (the “Associations”) support the proposal by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (the “Bureau”) to delay the June 1st effective date for section 1026.36(i) in the Loan Originator Compensation Requirements rule (the “Final Rule”), which prohibits the financing of single-premium credit insurance offered in connection with residential mortgages.1 The Associations represent companies that either sell or underwrite credit insurance and debt protection products.

The Financial Services Roundtable1 and its Housing Policy Council2 appreciate the opportunity to comment on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (Bureau) proposal to amend some of the Bureau’s final mortgage rules (Proposal).3 We thank the Bureau for its dedication to ensuring that the new mortgage rules are clear and effective and implemented as efficiently as possible.

Tim Pawlenty, president and CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable, said a recent survey conducted by his group found respondents less worried about economic conditions as barriers to growth than the “cumulative effect of regulations. … We look at lack of clarity and certainty [with respect] to the timing, nature, and magnitude” of multiple rules initiatives.
